Flávia Vieira - Milagro
Event
Although few in number, the pre-Columbian pieces in the CIAJG collection (textiles, ceramics, and objects) serve as material evidence of the cultural and technological diversity experienced by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas before the European invasion. The 33 objects originate from Inca, Chimú, Chancay, Moche, Aztec, Nicoya, Mixtec, Talamanca, and Nayarit cultures (which occupied parts of Central and South America) and date from approximately 500 BCE to 1532 CE. It is this rich, exuberant, yet irretrievably lost worldview that artist Flávia Vieira evokes in Milagro, an exhibition that engages in dialogue with these objects.
Flávia Vieira (1983, Braga)
Through the predominant use of textiles and ceramics in an installation context, Flávia Vieira's work explores cultural, historical, and political narratives related to the processes of creation, examining notions of identity, memory, collective representation, botanical diaspora, and otherness. She holds a degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto, a Master's in Communication and Arts from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Nova University of Lisbon, and a PhD in Visual Poetics and Creative Processes from the Institute of Arts at Unicamp in São Paulo.
She exhibits regularly in Portugal and abroad, particularly in Brazil, where she once resided. Notable recent solo exhibitions include Brasilina at KUBIKGallery, Porto (2022) and Hopes and Fears at KUBIKGallery, Porto (2019). Her work is included in various collections, such as the Instituto Inhotim (Brazil), the Contemporary Art Collection of the State - CACE (Portugal), the Municipal Art Collection of Lisbon City Council (Portugal), the Municipal Art Collection of Porto City Council - PLÁKA (Portugal), and the Norlinda and José Lima Collection (Portugal).
