Time and Space: The Marrabenta Solos
For ages 6 and above
Event
"The body is history. In this case: the recent history of Mozambique. "Time and Space: The Marrabenta Solos" explores a crisis of identity, deconstructing cultural representations of a 'pure' African body, particularly the Mozambican body. Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, Mozambique has been a land of social and political divisions that witnessed a rigid communist model gradually giving way to a fragile democracy.
"Time and Space: The Marrabenta Solos" delves into the idea of the African body today: a plural and post-colonial body that has absorbed the ideals of nationalism, modernity, socialism, and freedom of expression. Panaibra Canda's body and dance reflect the fragmentation of the country, the biographies, and aspirations – made visible through minimal and startling gestures. The solo is accompanied by the virtuoso guitarist Jorge Domingos, who explores Marrabenta music born in the 1950s from a blend of Mozambican and European influences."
Panaibra Gabriel Canda, born in Maputo, Mozambique, is one of the most influential choreographers in Africa, reflecting the post-colonial upheavals of the country like no other. He studied theater, dance, and music in Mozambique and Portugal. Since 1993, he has been developing his own artistic projects. His work has been presented worldwide and has received numerous awards. In 1998, he founded CulturArte - Cultura e Arte em Movimento, perhaps the first and only production space for contemporary dance in Mozambique. Panaibra's dedication as an artistic director and choreographer is focused on supporting and developing the local and regional dance scene, including creations, performances, and training. For 25 years, Panaibra has worked as a dancer and choreographer in Maputo and around the world.
